However, if one takes a step back and thinks about what students might be struggling with, one can quickly see how fast these texts expect students to make leaps in their understanding. One concern that I have with any accounting textbook is whether there will be a homework system that the students can benefit from and that makes grading homework an easy process. With the books that I use in my courses (McGraw-Hill, Wiley, and Pearson), I rely heavily on the LMS platforms that the publisher provides. I could be wrong, but I did not see evidence of that in this text. Of course, I could create such a homework system with our university’s blackboard system but it would be a great deal of work, especially if a robust and comprehensive (content) system was created.

The approach used by the authors through each chapter is consistent. I gave the text 3/5 as being both accessible prose and inaccessible (confusing) prose, adequate content and inadequate content. It is a sold text book that would require significant modification and adaptation to work for me. The authors do state of oregon a fine job of proceeding through the expected topics at a manageable pace while giving sufficient depth for an introductory course. When teams have clarity into the work getting done, there’s no telling how much more they can accomplish in the same amount of time.

The numeric subtotals and totals on these statements are used to calculate standard financial measures and ratios used to evaluate the organization’s performance. The text’s organization then proceeds sequentially through the balance sheet accounts, explaining in more detail how the accounting for each category of economic value is recorded and reported. The author’s decision to move the most complex content to the end of the book matches how most faculty choose to organize their coverage of these topics. This textbook is a Principles of Accounting text on steroids.

As this is mostly a quantitative subject, issue of culture is not really relevant. But the examples that are used seemed very inclusive and there is no cultural in-sensitiveness. Overall the chapters can be easily divided into smaller parts. The textbook is consistent with respect to terminology.

  1. The content is tailored to provide comprehensive insights into accounting practices and their applications in the business world without perpetuating cultural insensitivity.
  2. The text includes accurate financial accounting information.
  3. I gave the text 3/5 as being both accessible prose and inaccessible (confusing) prose, adequate content and inadequate content.

I would rather see the organization of the chapterfollow the order of the accounts on a balance sheet. The same comment isalso valid for the organization of Chapter 5. One of the major strengths of this textbook is its simple writing style and theclarity of its exposition. The ideas are easy to follow, and the examples arepresented in small knowledge bites, which increases the overall readabilityand clarity of the concepts for the students. David Annand, EdD, MBA, CA, is a Professor of Accounting in the Faculty of Business at Athabasca University. I found this textbook and its exercises to be a useful teaching and learning tool.

It would be easily possible to assemble a survey course combining topics from this book and the second offering (Principles of Managerial Accounting) to create a one-semester offering. Basic principles are introduced in the proper sequence, and the authors clearly present the topics in the expected manner. A report for tracking your cash available to pay bills.
